*Juneteenth is a celebration of the ending of slavery in the US with Texas being the last state to free slaves.
*On June 19, 1865, Union general Granger landed at Galveston with Union troops and announced that the war was over and the enslaved were free
*Note that Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was officially in effect January 1, 1863. Since Texas was the most remote state, enforcement of the proclamation was slow and inconsistent
*The last 400m run as a class symbolizes the 400+ years of African American history in this country
