CFCH Book Club

CrossFit Central Houston is full of people who are looking to learn and better themselves, so why not get together and do just that in a way other than fitness?!

The CFCH Book Club will choose one book each month on a personal development, fitness or wellness topic, then meet to discuss. Members are welcome to bring friends and family to join in, too! We’ll begin by meeting at the gym on the last Thursday of each month at 7pm however, at the first meeting we can discuss if there is better day/time for everyone.

If you want in, join the CFCH Book Club Facebook Group page, and add your name to the email list on the front desk at the gym!

JUNE BOOK SELECTION: Born to Run by Christopher McDougall

Isolated by Mexico's deadly Copper Canyons, the blissful Tarahumara Indians have honed the ability to run hundreds of miles without rest or injury. In a riveting narrative, award-winning journalist and often-injured runner Christopher McDougall sets out to discover their secrets. In the process, he takes his readers from science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultra-runners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to a climactic race in the Copper Canyons that pits America’s best ultra-runners against the tribe. McDougall’s incredible story will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.

I personally found this book fascinating! I hope you’ll join us in reading it, and then as a group, we can vote on our book choices moving forward.

Here’s some questions you can be thinking about for our discussion:

What do you think of the thesis that humans are literally “born to run”? Did McDougall do a good job in proving this theory in the book?

Before reading this book, had you ever heard of ultra-running or barefoot running? What were your prior thoughts about it? Did this book change that?

What philosophy or ways of thinking mentioned in the book will you take away and carry with you?
