Why Class is Required at CrossFit Central Houston

by Teresa Trojanowski

CFCH Policy:

Unless during a scheduled “Open Gym” time, participation in a class is required to use the facility. Members are welcome to do extra independent work either before or after this class, if they so choose.

In other words, we don’t allow folks to come into the gym to do their own thing and leave (a la 24-Hour Fitness/LA Fitness). But why?

The answer is COMMUNITY. We believe that our members would agree that the CFCH Community is one of a kind, and possibly our greatest asset. However, a great community doesn’t evolve on accident; it is the result of intentional choices we’ve made to set it up for success. Of course, we lucked out that YOU walked through the door and made it even better, but we’ve tried to do our part to provide an environment for relationships to thrive. :)

Allowing use of the facility without class participation opens the door for people to enter and exit the building without being seen or known. Perhaps they make it in and out without speaking to anyone or without getting any coaching.

Our three core values are: RELATIONSHIPS, EXCELLENCE, and INTEGRITY.

Each decision that is made regarding CrossFit Central Houston is done through the filter of these core values, and we believe that our class participation policy reinforces both “Relationships” and “Excellence.”

Have we had to turn down potential members because of this policy? Absolutely. In fact, MANY. However, we’re unwilling to sacrifice what we believe to be important. In the end, you can’t always have your cake and eat it, too. You can’t spend more money than you make, and expect to get rich. You can’t refuse to exercise so that you can lounge on the couch all day, and also expect to get strong. Just like we can’t have a community filled with strong relationships and people who know how to move safely, AND also facilitate an environment where people don’t have to interact with one another.
