2020 Open (Part 2): FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and CFCH TEAMS

So you’ve registered for the Open….

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN????

Here at CrossFit Central Houston, we like to make the Open a time for community and celebration. So the first thing it means is that you’re going to be put on one of TEN in-house teams, headed up by one of our coaching staff. This year, we’ve organized things so that each team will go head-to-head against one other team each week. For instance if you are assigned to Ashley’s River Bandit’s team, week 1 you might be taking on Sara’s Sea Wolves. Week 2 you could be head-to-head with Dan’s Blue Wahoos, etc. The team who earns the most points each week is declared the winner of their match-up.

How do you earn points?

  • Attending the Thursday Throwdown workout announcement event

  • Attending Friday Night Lights

  • Judging another athlete at Friday Night Lights

  • Participating in the weekly spirit theme

  • Having the top male/female RX/scaled score in each match-up

At the end of the 5 weeks, the team with the best record will be awarded claim over the giant trophy that’s sitting at the front desk for an entire year, AND each member of the team will get their own personal trophy. Most importantly…lots of bragging rights, and a ton of fun along the way.

FAQ:
What’s the Thursday Throwdown?
On Thursday evenings at 7pm, CrossFit.com will announce to the entire world what the workout will be for that weekend. We have a big projector and sound system set up and will broadcast the live announcement, and immediately following, 4 preselected CFCH members will take on the workout. We’ll cheer them on, and get an idea of what we’ll be facing the next day in classes/Friday Night Lights. Family and friends are welcome to this event, and feel free to bring your dinner/snacks with you! Vital Kitchen meals will also be on site.

How does Friday Night Lights work?
The gym will open at 4pm for warm-up, but you may arrive any time. When you come in, you’ll go to the warm-up area in the back and 1) add your name to whichever heat time you’d like to go in, 2) find a friend to sign-up as your judge, 3) check the whiteboard for the workout standards and a suggested warm-up. Coaches will be on site to answer any questions. You just need to be ready when your heat is called! We highly encourage you to bring your friends and family to come cheer you on through your workout, and then enjoy the atmosphere, help judge some other folks, and get some dinner from the food truck on site!

Do I need to do anything special to be able to judge someone?
No. There are no special requirements to being a judge (unless you are judging someone who intends to qualify for the CrossFit Games). You are simply counting reps and ensuring that the movement standards (like squatting below parallel, getting the chin over the bar, etc.) are met. However, if you’d like to, you can take the CrossFit judges course here: https://oc.crossfit.com/course?id=21 . It’s very informative, and may give you some extra confidence.

What are the spirit themes?
Week 1: Crazy Hair and Headwear
Week 2: Movie/TV Character Night
Week 3: Houston Strong + Giveback Night (bring canned food donations for an additional point)
Week 4: Halloween!
Week 5: Black and White Night
